Roswell, New Mexico: A Short Trip That Was Out of This World

Roswell was a short trip, but it’s one I won’t forget. I’ve always been obsessed with aliens and UFOs, so visiting Roswell, New Mexico, was something I’d wanted to do for years. Finally getting there meant seeing a place I’d heard about so many times—and having a perfectly acceptable reason to spend the day looking at alien stuff.

We visited the museum, explored the shops, and enjoyed weather that was perfect for walking around. My biggest complaint? We needed more time.

Why Roswell Was on My List

Some people plan trips around beaches, food, or sporting events. Apparently, I plan mine around the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors.

Roswell’s connection to UFO history goes back to the 1947 discovery of unusual debris near the city. The reports and controversy that followed helped turn its name into one of the most recognizable in UFO culture. Whatever your interpretation of that story, it has given Roswell an identity that makes it a memorable destination.

For someone with my interests, it was an easy addition to the travel list. There’s something satisfying about finally visiting a place that has lived in your imagination for years.

The UFO Museum Was Worth Every Penny

The International UFO Museum and Research Center was a highlight of the trip. For me, it was worth every penny.

The museum explores the 1947 Roswell Incident and other UFO-related subjects through photographs, documents, exhibits, and research materials. It gives visitors plenty to consider alongside the more playful alien displays.

Our pictures capture that mix well: a flying saucer surrounded by alien figures, science-fiction-style containment displays, and a replica spacesuit. There was plenty to photograph, and those images are exactly the kind of souvenirs I wanted from Roswell.

The exhibits present stories, claims, and interpretations surrounding UFOs. You don’t have to leave with every mystery solved to enjoy spending time there. I came because the subject fascinates me, and the museum made the stop worthwhile.

Exploring the Shops and Alien Displays

We also made our way through the shops. If you’re going to visit Roswell, browsing the alien-themed stores feels like part of the experience.

The playful side of town was just as memorable as the museum. One of our photos shows a bright green alien riding an enormous colorful bird outside a shop. Another captures the large UFO Festival lettering on the Visitor Center building.

Those are the details that give a trip personality. You can photograph the main attraction, then turn around and find something completely ridiculous that deserves a picture too. Roswell gave us both.

Perfect Weather for a Short Visit

The weather cooperated, which made it easy to enjoy being outside between stops. Walking around, looking at the displays, and going into the shops was a good way to spend our time.

The visit didn’t need a complicated itinerary to be memorable. For me, finally being in Roswell and enjoying its alien obsession was enough.

What I Would Do Differently

I would give us more time.

We fit the museum and shopping into a short visit, but next time I’d leave more room to explore without watching the clock. I’d also give myself extra time inside the museum to read and look around at my own pace.

My advice to another UFO fan would be to start with the museum, leave time for the shops, and keep your camera ready for the unusual displays along the way. Check attraction hours before traveling so a short visit doesn’t become an even shorter one.

Would I Go Back?

Absolutely.

Roswell delivered something I’d wanted for years: a chance to visit a place tied to a subject that has always caught my attention. The museum was worth it, the shops added to the fun, and the weather made the whole trip easier to enjoy.

We may have been short on time, but we weren’t short on memories. Next time, I’m leaving more room in the schedule for aliens.
