Mykonos, Greece: Greek Wine, Coastal Views, and a Lighthouse in the Wind

Mykonos was easily one of the most gorgeous stops of our Mediterranean cruise. Between a sun-soaked vineyard, Greek wine my wife fell in love with, time along the shore, and a lighthouse overlooking the sea, the entire excursion felt worth every step—and every glass.

A Sunny Mykonos Expedition

Mykonos greeted us with bright sunshine and scenery that immediately stood apart. The day was hot, but it was the kind of heat that became part of the experience instead of ruining it.

Our excursion combined several different sides of the island. We toured a vineyard, tasted Greek wine, visited the beach, walked along the shore, and finished at a lighthouse with one of the most memorable views of the trip.

The vineyard was one of the highlights of Mykonos. We were able to see the property, learn about the vineyard, and sit down for a wine tasting.

My wife fell in love with the Greek wine—and honestly, it was easy to understand why. The setting made it difficult not to get caught up in the moment. We had live music playing while we enjoyed wine with cheese, bread, and cured meats.

It was more than a tasting. The music, food, sunshine, and atmosphere turned it into one of those travel experiences where you stop worrying about the schedule and simply enjoy where you are. We may have enjoyed the wine a little too much.

The Beach and Shoreline

After the vineyard, we made our way to the beach. We spent time near the water and took pictures along the shore instead of rushing through the stop.

Mykonos was one of those destinations that constantly gave us another reason to pull out the camera. The brilliant water, rocky shoreline, and bright Mediterranean sun made even a simple walk along the coast feel memorable.

Fighting the Wind at the Lighthouse

Our next stop was the lighthouse. Reaching it rewarded us with an incredible view—but the wind was relentless.

It was so strong that simply standing still became part of the challenge. We had to brace ourselves against the gusts while trying to take pictures and appreciate everything around us.

The struggle was worth it. From the lighthouse, the open water seemed to stretch forever. It was one of those views that makes the uncomfortable parts of an excursion disappear for a moment.

Wine, Wind, and What We Would Change

The honest answer is simple: we probably would not drink quite as much wine at the vineyard.

That is easier to say afterward. While we were there, surrounded by live music, Greek wine, food, sunshine, and the atmosphere of Mykonos, it was difficult not to get swept up in the experience.

Our best advice would be to enjoy the tasting while remembering that the excursion is not over afterward. Drink water, pace yourself, eat the food provided, and save some energy for the beach and lighthouse.

Before You Go

Wear sunscreen and bring water for the sunny portions of the excursion.
Eat during the wine tasting and pace yourself.
Keep enough energy for the stops that follow the vineyard.
Secure hats and loose belongings before visiting the lighthouse.
Wear shoes that provide stable footing in heavy wind.
Leave room on your phone or camera—the coastline demands pictures.
Slow down long enough to enjoy the atmosphere instead of treating every stop like a checklist.

The Stop We Would Happily Repeat

Mykonos was beautiful from beginning to end. The vineyard gave us great wine, food, and live music. The beach gave us time beside the water. The lighthouse gave us an unforgettable view—and a serious fight against the wind.

We might drink a little less wine next time, but we would gladly experience the entire day again.

Sometimes the best travel memories happen when the wine is flowing, the music is playing, and the wind nearly knocks you off your feet.
